Home About Us What we do

Together We Build.
Everything we do is centred around helping young people rediscover a love of learning, develop confidence in themselves, and prepare for successful adult lives with SEND. We understand that many of our pupils arrive having experienced disrupted education, anxiety around school, and a loss of trust in educational settings. Our role is not simply to educate – it is to rebuild confidence, restore belief and create opportunities for every young person to succeed.

We Build Resilient Learners
Learning begins when children feel safe, understood and ready to engage. We provide personalised learning pathways that recognise each pupil’s strengths, interests and individual needs. Our curriculum develops communication, emotional regulation, independence and academic achievement alongside the skills needed for everyday life. By celebrating progress, encouraging curiosity and supporting pupils through challenge, we help them become resilient learners who believe in their own potential.

We Build Trusted Relationships
Positive relationships are the foundation of everything we do. We work closely with pupils, families and professionals to create an environment built on trust, consistency and understanding. Our staff take time to understand each young person’s individual profile, recognising that behaviour is communication and that feeling safe is essential before learning can flourish. Parents are valued as partners throughout their child’s journey, ensuring that support extends beyond the classroom and into everyday life.

We Build Brighter Futures
Success looks different for every young person. Whether preparing for qualifications, developing independence, accessing work experience or building the confidence to participate in their community, we focus on equipping pupils with the knowledge, skills and resilience they need for life beyond school. Our ambition is that every student leaves Oakham Shires with greater confidence, meaningful achievements and a positive vision for their future.
________________________________________

For many families, choosing a specialist school can feel like a significant decision. At Oakham Shires, we understand that autism is not something to be “fixed”—it is a different way of experiencing and interacting with the world. Many of our pupils have faced challenges in previous educational settings, including sensory overload, social anxiety, difficulties with communication, disrupted education or placements that were unable to meet their needs.
Our approach is based on understanding these differences rather than expecting pupils to fit into a traditional model of schooling. We provide predictable routines, personalised support, small class sizes and a curriculum that balances academic learning with communication, emotional regulation, independence and life skills. By reducing barriers to learning and recognising each child’s individual strengths, we enable pupils to feel safe enough to take risks, build relationships and achieve success.
Every child follows their own journey, but our goal is always the same: Together, we build resilient learners, trusted relationships and brighter futures.
